Rainy Memorial Day Weekend
So, this is Memorial Day weekend and it’s raining. It also looks like it will *continue* raining throughout the weekend.
Yep. I just checked local KSAT and the major headline is “Heavy Rain, Flooding Expected for Memorial Day Weekend”. At least I won’t have to water the flowers on the balcony any time soon.
The good news is there are a TON of good movies in theaters.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End opens this weekend. Remember, that one has a whole pile of popular actors in it: Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffery Rush, and Johnny Depp.
Bug starring Ashley Judd opens this weekend as well.
Away from Her is playing as well. This looks like a good one for “The Notebook” fans.
What caught my attention was Hurricane on the Bayou which is showing at IMAX at 10am and 12pm.
The blurb found at Yahoo movies is:
Shot before and after the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the documentary brings into focus the startling loss of Louisiana’s rapidly disappearing coastal wetlands that are New Orleans’ first line of defense against deadly storms. Told through the personal stories of four musicians, both legendary and rising, who are drawing attention to this environmental calamity. The story is both a document of Katrina’s powerful effects, and a profound musical celebration of the city that has been called the “soul of America.” It is a call to restore New Orleans and protect the vital wetlands from which the city’s unique identity first arose.
I worked at a hotel along I30 during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and came to know lots of people affected by the storm. Our 64 room hotel was booked to the brim for weeks by these people and it was deeply upsetting to watch them obsessively watching the tv, looking for news of people they knew and places they’d lived. Many of these people lost everything they had in these storms and I watched them learn of it for the first time. I had nothing to lose to these storms and I still remember it as a grief stricken time.
Perhaps we’ll go to see it Sunday or Monday. Don’t forget-the Cajun Food and Music Festival is Saturday and the dance lessons start at 10am!
